True or False: You CAN Make Money While You Sleep

It’s a crying shame really. So many people have tried to follow the Internet dream. They’ve heard the stories of others who quit their day jobs, wake up whenever they choose, take leisurely lunches with friends, shop for hours on end without one worry about how to pay for their purchases, buy new cars and pay cash for them, and make money hand over fist while they sleep. Naturally, these people would drool over the thought of being able to do the same for themselves.

However, as the landslide of people all across the globe began to flock to the ‘Net much like they did to California in the gold-rush days, they find that making money while you sleep might be a myth. They wonder if they’ve just been led astray by wicked, evil people with nothing better to do than make fools out of innocent, hardworking folks.

What is the answer? Can you make money online? CAN you make money while you sleep? I don’t mean an extra $200 a month to pay for groceries, but a real living. If so, how do you go about it?

It’s True! I’m Doing It Myself!

First of all, it’s not a myth. I can honestly tell you that I am making a full-time living online. And yes, there have been many mornings where I’ve awakened, turned on my computer, and found notifications of sales that occurred during the night. I AM making money while I sleep, and you can, too.

Let me tell you what I think probably happened to generate this long-standing myth.

The early Internet pioneers discovered ways to make automated income. They realized this was a wonderful thing and began to spread the news to everyone they knew. Then, however, those unscrupulous types (you know… the jerks) saw this as an easy way to make a fast buck. They began preaching that making automated income online was as easy as pouring yourself a glass of water. In essence, they told half the story. As more and more people tried to make a living online and failed, the promise of making money while you sleep became fiction instead of fact.

So How Do You Do It?

What’s the real truth? How can you make a full-time living online just like me? There are several ways. Let me give you the unvarnished gospel when it comes to online business. You may not like what you hear, but it is fact, not fluff.

ACTION STEP 1
Plan, Plan, Plan - It won’t happen overnight. Nothing good ever does. In the beginning, you’re going to create a plan then be ready to work that plan. You often hear about throwing up a website and making money while you sleep. Technically, yes, that’s all there is to it. But… how does that site get up on the ‘Net?

You have to create your site or have someone else create it. That means you have to take the time to learn professional website development (PLEASE, don’t create some junky, homemade-looking site!), or you have to pay someone who already knows how to create websites. And what will you have on your site? Your own products? (Having your own e-products is highly recommended.) Someone else’s products? You’ll need to decide before your site is created.

How will people pay for the products they buy from your site? Do you have a merchant account? Will you become an affiliate for someone else so you don’t need a payment system?

Will you go for high search engine rankings or rely on word-of-mouth, PPC ads, and other types of paid advertising? If you want good search engine optimization, you’ll have to plan for that upfront. Again, you’ll have to take time to learn how to do it or pay someone else who already knows how.

Before you take one more step toward launching your own Web business, find the answers to the questions above.

ACTION STEP 2
Be Ready to Work - Once your site is ready to launch, how will people find you? How, exactly, will you drive qualified visitors to your site? Will you use organic (free) search engine listings? Will you use Pay-Per-Click search engine ads? Will you buy ezine ads? Do you have other means for getting customers to visit your site? People won’t just come out of the blue, you’ll have to bring them to your site somehow.

Even if you choose to go for the organic search engine listings, you’ll have about a 4-week to 4-month wait before seeing your new site listed. What will you do in the meantime to drum up business?

ACTION STEP 3
How Will You Keep It Going? - Prosperous businesses are continually growing to keep up with customer demands. How will you keep your online business moving forward? Will you do research into what consumers want? Will you guess? Will you just follow the crowd?

You’ll want to have some method for gauging customer responses so you can know what your site visitors want and how to provide it for them.

One such way is to use Survey Monkey (http://www.surveymonkey.com). You can create online surveys in order to keep up with the needs/wants of your site visitors.

ACTION STEP 4
Service Is Key! - In order to make it in the long run, you simply must provide exceptional customer service to your clients. Those who lie, steal, cheat, or hide are destined to fail.

Understand this: Your success depends on your customers’ success. If they aren’t happy, you won’t be in business long. Make every effort to treat them as the kings and queens they are.

See? The people who turned the “make money while you sleep” fact into fiction did so because they skipped all the important information. Now that you know what to expect, you can see that it is most definitely possible to make a full-time living online. It is even possible to make money while you sleep. However, you must have a plan, be ready to work, look for ways to keep your business growing, and treat your customers as true V.I.P.s.

When you do, you’ll have all the tools you need to develop a long-standing business that - with time - will produce for you.

Network Marketing Internet Business Do’s and Don’ts

Posted in Make Money by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007
by: Jeff Schuman

Why did you start your own network marketing internet business?
Most people immediately respond, “for the money!” However, this
is not the real reason.

No one subjects them to the hard work of building a business
just for little pieces of paper with the faces of dead
presidents. The truth is you work in order to obtain what those
little pieces of paper can bring you.

The first thing you need to do is to find the reason WHY you are
a network marketer. Is it the freedom to choose whatever you
want to do whenever you want to do it? Maybe you are looking for
a different lifestyle. If there is one thing that is critical to
your network marketing internet business success, this is it. If
you don’t have a reason, there is no motivation to succeed.

A network marketing business is a teaching and coaching
business. If you don’t like interaction with other people, a
network marketing business probably is not for you. There’s a
concept that most network marketers just can’t seem to get a
handle on. You do not sponsor “reps,” you sponsor “people!”

If you have to find a reason why you are building your network
marketing business, on the internet then doesn’t it stand to
reason that other people will have to do the same thing? If
that’s the case, then why is it that network marketers
continually focus on how much money your prospect can earn?

There’s no way you are going to convince “Joe Sixpack,” to get
out of his Lazyboy recliner unless you find out what his
motivation is. Most network marketers literally pound in the
amount of money Joe can earn. They bombard him with message
after message about how “Successful Sam” has just purchased his
10th Porsche, refurnished his 25,000 square foot cottage and
promise Joe that he can do the same!

Just how realistic is this approach? Joe isn’t stupid. He works
long, hard hours at his job in order to provide for his family
and truly believes that the best thing he can hope for is saving
enough money by summer to pay for a camping trip. Then here you
come, promising Joe that he can have everything that Sam has and
he can have it if he will just sign that piece of paper making
you his sponsor!

You will probably sponsor a few people that way, but if you are
in business for the long haul you need to change your approach
and do it fast.

The proper approach is so simple, but in your rush to sponsor
another “rep” instead of helping another person, all too often
you talk yourself into and straight out of sponsoring the Joes
of the world.

God gave you two ears and one mouth and he did it for a reason.
We are supposed to “listen” twice as much as we “speak.”

Instead of pouncing on Joe with the latest and greatest network
marketing program of all time, find out what Joe wants and
needs. Ask him questions, lots of questions. In fact, in your
first meeting with Joe, don’t even mention your business! Yes,
that’s what I said. Don’t even bring it up. Remove yourself from
the super duper network marketing persona and spend time making
a new friend.

Follow these recommendations and you are set to grow your
network marketing internet business as large as you want.

Things To Consider When Starting Your Own Work At Home Internet Business

Posted in Make Money by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007
by: Jeff Schuman

If you think that starting your own work at home internet
business is the answer to your problems; whether it’s money,
child care, illness or a desire for more free time, then you
MUST choose wisely.

Too many individuals eagerly leave their paying jobs in order to
work at home with their own internet business only to return to
the unemployment arena looking for work and carrying a massive
debt from their ventures.

How can you find the answer to your quest for your own work at
home internet business without failing? Here’s 3 keys!

DESIRE DISCRETION DISCIPLINE

DESIRE —-

If you think that running own business and working at home at
home is merely a matter of using your brains then you are sure
to be disappointed.

Successful entrepreneurs have a common thread no matter if they
run the run a country gas station or a Fortune 500 company -
DESIRE. If you don’t have the drive and determination to work
for yourself - if you can’t give up the security of a regular
pay cheque - you will have great difficulty working for
yourself.

DISCRETION —-

Expect to fail. There are many opportunities available. Some are
good, some are frauds and several are absolutely perfect - for
YOU. Each individual’s strengths and talents will impact which
business model will suit them best.

If you are very shy or hate to talk to people than it would be
wise to stay away from businesses that require a lot of
face-to-face selling. If the product is not something you would
personally use it is not something you will want to promote and
that will show in your efforts.

Take stock of your abilities and interests and try several
businesses that are related. Not all will suit you, but trying
things will ultimately improve your business skills overall.

If you do fall for what turns out to be a fraud, consider it
education and move on - you will not likely make the same
mistake again.

Consider talking to business owners who do what you want to do
or to people who may use your product or service. Research the
business and read the fine print!

DISCIPLINE —-

You don’t have a boss or a time clock, but if you expect to make
a living then you will have to discipline yourself. Have a
schedule that you follow every day. Plan your time wisely.

Although many procrastinators actually do well working for
themselves it is still vitally important to know what needs to
be done and to have the discipline to follow through. A few bad
jobs or unhappy customers can have lasting impact on your
business.

Many have found great happiness and success working for
themselves. It is exciting to run your own internet business and
work at home doing it!

Schedule Success When Starting Your Own Home Based Business

Posted in Make Money by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007
by: Jeff Schuman

Would you like to start a home based business online?

A lot of people dream of starting their own home based business.
They dream of setting their own hours, working when they want to
work and with whom. The reality is that very few of these people
ever take the time to ensure that they have the right skill set
- the right tools - to make the leap to a home-based enterprise.

The first major pitfall that most new home-based business owners
face is a lack of scheduling discipline. They just don’t plan
out their work days. This can cause problems in two ways,
under-working and overworking.

Let’s look at the first one, “under-working.” It’s very easy to
sit at home, on the ol’ PC surfing the web. You might intend on
working on your new website or putting up auctions on eBay, but,
before you know it, you’ve spent the entire day reading email
and surfing for the latest news and gossip. Sure, you were
online and you were doing something, but the things you were
doing are not the things that will put a dime in your bank
account.

Overworking is pretty easy to understand. Some people simply
don’t know how to keep business hours. When they work from home,
the temptation is there to “work ’til you drop.” That’s not
good, especially if you start a home a based business online on
the side and still work a day job. If you spend all your time
working, you’ll soon feel that you’re never getting any “down
time,” and burnout is sure to follow. Believe me, I know all
about this one.

Here’s the solution. You must be very disciplined in planning
your day. Write down what you need to accomplish every day and
how long you will work on each item. Be sure to include downtime
in your plan - time for your family, relaxation, exercise,
whatever. This is important. after all, you’re starting a
home-based business to build a lifestyle, not to become the
richest person in the cemetery!

Your daily plans and goals need to be very specific. It won’t do
you any good to write something like, “work on project x.” What
does that mean? How exactly do you “work on something?” Your
plan needs to include a definite finishing point, such as “write
a new article on dog grooming for page one of the website.” See
the difference? You can “work on” a project for years and never
reach a point where you’ve had any success. By contrast, when
you “write an article on x,” you know you’re done as soon as
you’ve typed the final period.

If you’re in a marketing business, try to farm out as much of
the non-marketing related work as you can afford to do. For
example, if you sell products or services, it might be
beneficial for you to hire someone to help build and maintain
your website. The money you’ll spend to have someone else do it
will be more than offset by the amount of time it will free up.
Other areas you can outsource for your home based business
online might be bookkeeping, mailing, etc.

Be realistic when planning your day. If you’re still working
your day job, schedule that from the time you get up in the
morning until you get home from work. Don’t forget to include
commute time. Then, plan out your evening accordingly. Don’t
schedule a four hour task to be completed in one hour. It won’t
happen. If you have huge tasks, break them up as much as
possible and schedule your time accurately. This will allow you
to have a feeling of accomplishment and you’ll get a lot more
done in the long run.

Don’t multi-task. I know that this is the latest “buzzword,”
but, in reality, multi-taking is one of the leading killers of
productivity for most people. Schedule only one project at a
time. You can work on more than one project during the day, but
you shouldn’t work on more than one project at a time. It’s very
difficult, if not totally impossible, to serve to masters at the
same time. Give one project your undivided attention. Once
you’ve completed that task, move on to another tasks on that
project or to another project.

If you start your home based business online with tunnel vision
on a daily basis you will accomplish more and become more
successful in a shorter period of time.

You should also be a little flexible in your scheduling. In any
business, there are bound to be interruption s that you couldn’t
possibly have planned for. In home-based businesses, the chance
of distraction goes up exponentially. You’ll be working on that
hot new project, only to have the toilet overflow or a neighbor
ring the doorbell. Plan on it. There will be things that happen
that you can’t plan for. That’s why your schedule needs to
include a little cushion.

What I like to do is plan out the items I want to get done and
overestimate the time it will take to do them, by say 10%. Then,
I have other items which are “on deck.” These items aren’t quite
on today’s schedule, but I want to do them soon. If I complete
all of my scheduled tasks for the day, I simply look to see
what’s on deck and start on one of them. It’s a bonus.

Sometimes, no matter how well you plan, you just won’t finish
what you schedule. It happens to everyone. That’s when you
simply revise your schedule for the next day to include the
missed item(s). Don’t get hung up on the fact that an item or
two didn’t get done as planned. Just take it in stride and keep
on moving forward. Now, if you find yourself routinely missing
your deadlines, you’ll need to reevaluate your scheduling. Are
you being realistic in your time allotments? Probably not.
Adjust accordingly.

Here are just a few tips to help you maintain sanity and get
your work done. With a little planning and a little effort, you
can balance your home life and start a home based business
online and literally schedule your way to success.

How To Choose The Best MLM Leads

Copyright 2004 Jeff Schuman

What are the characteristics of the Best Mlm Leads? This is a good question to ask before you spend any money buying leads to build your MLM business. Before we get to that let’s take a look at why you would want to buy MLM leads in the first place.

Over the years the multi-level marketing business has gotten a black eye because of the over hyped promises of money and freedom. Very few people have ever achieved a high level of success in any MLM business. And even fewer have ever been able to maintain the level of achievements over a period of time.

That does not make MLM companies bad. Nor does it make the opportunities they afford the average person as a way to make extra money or even as a way to drastically change your lifetsyle. It can be done and using MLM leads is a great way to do it.

There are 2 big benefits to buying MLM leads.

1. It gets you away from approaching your friends and relatives. If you have been in more than one MLM business over the years you may have already approached them and used up your credibility when you were unsuccessful.

2. This is a duplicatible way to build your business that you can pass on to your downline. Any successful network marketing business will tell you that one of the main components of success is duplication. Anyone can buy leads and work them over the phone or thur the internet with the use of an autoresponder.

If you are unsure of how to work a lead over the phone I would suggest getting the book “Recruit Your Way To Millions” by Fred Stegge. After reading this book you will be able to explain what you do and what you offer to a new prospect in 30 seconds or less. http://www.team-schuman.com/recruit-your-way

If you are unsure of what an autoresponder is or how to use one read this article I wrote “How To Effectively Use An Autoresponder.” This is an absolutely essential business tool if you are going to succeed online with your MLM business.
http://team-schuman.com/articles/article15.html

Now that you understand some of the benefits of buying MLM leads and how to market to them let’s take a look at what are the characteristics of the Best MLM Leads.

1. How many times are the leads sold? Many MLM lead companies sell their leads over and over. You will be contacting a prospect that has already been marketed to. Personally I like eads that are exclusive to me.

2. How old are the leads? Would you rather contact a prospect that has expressed an interest in the past 48 hours or in the past 48 days. Being able to strike while the iron is hot so to speak is a great benefit of a fresh lead.

3. How many leads do you get for your money? Obviously the more leads you can get for the best price the more leads you can buy at a time. This is especially important when you are first starting or when you are helping your downline get started.

4. What is the quality of the lead? Nothing compares to a lead that contains both a phone number and email address along with a few qualifying answers to questions like “How much can you invest to get started” or “How soon do you want to get started” or When is the best time to contact you?” If a prospect is answering these type of questions you are getting a much better quality lead than if you just have a name and email address.

5. What is the response rate? This will improve as your skill level at working your leads improves, but the fresher higher quality leads will give you a better response rate even when your skill level is low.

6. Do your leads come with any extras such as an autoresponder, training on how to work leads, pre-written email marketing letters, phone scripts, your own website, flash presentations, etc.

These are the top qualities of the Best MLM Leads. Be careful when choosing a place to get your leads. Not all MLM Lead companies are created equal. It is going to be the single most important decision you make when trying to grow your MLM Business. Make the wrong choice and you will waste your time and money as well as the time and money of your downline. Make the right choice and you can be building your business successfully for years to come.

Groups Lend Capability to Make Money on the Internet

Posted in Make Money by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007

by: Michael A Fowler, M.B.A.

William Shakespeare once wrote; “The world is a stage on which everyone is a player” … and in Network Marketing, each player must play his/her part.

To make money on the internet, working from home, you need to find the players that play their parts.

Making money online is much easier when everyone is part of the performance…

Groups play a large part in forming such an association. A Yahoo group is easy to form and allows communication to flow freely amongst the members. Keeping everyone informed of latest developments and ideas, is easily done through groups.

To truely realise the “make money at home” principle, you have to communicate and allow people to interact with each other. Team players are known to be more likely to make money online, than their individual opposites. Many minds are greater than one.

Groups are a think tank of ideas that can transform an individuals personal performance by injecting new ideas and methods into their flagging marketing strategies. To make money online, you sometimes need the sort of push that a Group can give you.

While some groups live a short life, many have been around for over 6 years or more and still give that sort of unconditional support that a new person needs, to make money on the internet. Failure rates are lower when a group is active and being led by motivational methods. The Group structure produces loyalty and belief to many people.

Anyone who is serious about learning how to make money online, should ask if there is a support group available within the business and then check it out, to see how active the group is, by looking at the mailing figures. Most groups record the number of posts made in any particular month. 78 or more would indicate some moderate activity.

Belonging to a number of groups is also a great way of relationship marketing. Joining groups that are aligned to your own personal interests, often foster a great number of business associates. Those are the sort people who are most likely to play their part.

Always remember that to make money on the internet, you have to socialise and be online on a consistent basis. Plugging people into an online group will also help you in your quest to make money online.

How To Make Money Online Without A Website

Posted in Make Money by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007

by: Melanie Mendelson

You don’t need to have a website to make money on the Internet. Here is a proven strategy to make money online without a website:

Step 1: Find Affiliate Product

Find a product to promote where you make good commission on each sale. Generally, you will get the biggest commissions on digital products. Digital products are defined as something that is downloaded directly to a customer’s computer after purchasing, like electronic books or software.

Since there is no extra cost per unit, no inventory and no shipping, the commissions are much greater than on regular “physical” goods. The most common commission on digital products is 50%. The best place to find such products is Clickbank.com.

Sign up as a reseller (also called affiliate) for a product that looks the most appealing to you. After you sign up, you will get a unique affiliate link where you need to send people to purchase the product.

Your affiliate link will have a special code that will tell the product owner that it’s you who referred the customer. The affiliate link code will allow your commissions to be tracked correctly and assigned to you.

Step 2: Get Domain Name

Get a domain name to redirect to your affiliate link. A domain name is a .COM name (like yourproduct.com). You can get it for under $9 at GoDaddy.com. GoDaddy.com will allow you to redirect your domain name to your affiliate link at no extra cost.

So when someone types in your .COM domain in their browser, it will go to your affiliate link. The visitor will see the website with the product you promote, and the commissions will be tracked correctly.

The reason why you need a domain name is that it’s memorable and it makes you look more trustworthy. Affiliate links tend to be too long and arouse suspicion. For example, most people would rather click on the link bestwidgets.com as opposed to abcwidgets.com?reseller=john

A domain name will make your affiliate link look like it’s your own website. So basically, you will have a product to promote and a website to send people to and get commissions - without really having your own website.

Step 3: Drive Traffic

In order to make sales, you need to get visitors to your domain name (which will forward them to the website of the product that you resell). You can pay for advertising and hope that your profit will be greater than advertising cost, or you can use free ways to generate traffic.

The most effective way to get free targeted visitors to your domain name is by writing and submitting articles. You can write short articles on the topic related to the product that you promote. At the end of the article, you include your author bio and your domain name link.

You will then submit your articles to various websites, and allow them to publish your articles as long as your link is included. Your articles will get published in many places on the Internet, and will be advertising your affiliate link at no cost to you whatsoever. People will read your articles, like what you have to say and click on your domain name link ready to buy.

Once you start getting regular sales from your articles, you can go back to step 1 and find another product to promote using this strategy. After a while, you will build up a nice source of Internet income - without even having a website.

“Internet Business Myths” – The True Facts That You Need To Know!

Posted in Domain by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007

by: Chris Taylor

“Build it & They Will Come”

If you built a theme park in the middle of the Amazon jungle and didn’t advertise it, do you think you would get many customers? Maybe a few guerilla’s and snakes may visit but unfortunately their wallets maybe a little low.

This is exactly the same with your web site, getting people to your web site or marketing is the most important part. The trick to it if there is one, is doing it right from the beginning so you don’t waist precious time and money.

“As I Can Get Everything for Free to Build a Successful and Profitable Online Business I Don’t Want To Spend Any Money”

How many times have I heard this one! I understand that the internet is perceived as a place where successful business is born though little work and not a dime spent but this is just not the truth. Although you can run a successful, profitable business on the internet with a lot less costs than a traditional (off-line) business, you still need funds to start.

It never seizes to amaze me when people have to contemplate the money aspect of buying a simple book or software program for their online business, yet they wish to be making ten of thousands each month!

Just as example: Bob has just become a fully qualified carpenter and is going to start his own business. But Bob is not going to spend much money on setting up his business because he can do it on the cheap! Therefore Bob

Will not buy a power saw, but use his hand saw instead
Will always buy second-hand timber to reduce costs
Will not use a mobile phone
Will not use his car as it is costs to much to run. He will put all his tools on the back of his bike and ride to each job! He will put all his tools on the back of his bike and ride to each job!

Does this sound ridiculous, even laughable? I’m sure you get my point.

So yes, at the start you really need to set yourself up with some good books, knowledge and the right tools. Do this and your business will get of to a profitable start and I’m talking about a lot of money for these things either. Stay with everything free and you’ll still be hoping for business success two years down the line.

“Information, Information & More Information”

Yes, if you decide to start an online business, the old “information overload bug” is sure to bite quickly, usually in the first few months. A few things can help you here.

1. Remember to take time out and relax, Rome wasn’t built in a day and so it will be with your business. Also, while you’re relaxing, ideas will come you that will help improve your business. If you’re constantly working, this will not happen.

2. Keep focused on what’s important for your business to be successful and don’t deviate from that.

3. Don’t give into “The temptation to re-invent the wheel” similar to number two above.

“The “One Big Secret to Online Success” Web Sites”

Let me clarify why there is such thinking about making money on the internet.

1. If you wanted to be a “plumber”, you would do your apprenticeship and then work for someone or then start your own business. If you wanted to own a “milk bar” you get a business loan, buy the “milk bar” and start running the business. Why do we know this and why are there no so called “secrets” regarding being a plumber or running a milk bar? Because these businesses have been around for a long time, to start them is “common knowledge”.

2. Therefore because the internet is new and evolving, how to start an internet business has yet to become “common knowledge” and there is still many unknown aspects regarding the subject unlike traditional business . Unfortunately, many now capitalize on this “unknown aspect” by selling so called “secret information” type products thus only increasing the myth regarding internet business.

3. Even if starting an internet business was “common knowledge”, there is simply too much information to decipher. Unlike going to the local library, finding the business section and picking one or two of the five books on “starting your own business”, your are now on the internet. You have a world library, the business section is as big as a football stadium and books on “starting your own business online” are in the thousands (including are the misleading ones).

4. This final point is the most important one. People want to believe there is an easy way to make a fortune without doing much work, they just have to find it! This is just human nature.
“I Will Get Rich Quickly with My Internet Business”
Yes you can make good money online and quicker than an “offline business” but it still requires, perseverance and a good work ethic (being proactive).

“Its Easy to Make Money On the Internet”

You’ll soon find out if this one is true!

“Marketing That Doesn’t Work”

Poor Ad Copy
90% of books or products with the word “secret” included in the title.
Banners
Safelists
FFA sites
Spam
Link farms
Start page programs (most)
Exit page programs

Unfortunately there are many websites offering the above tools in a package and promoting them as “successful marketing tools”. You have to pay a monthly fee to use there tools, all of which you can get for free and don’t work.

“How Many Search Engines?”

The ten big search engines account for between 85 to 99% of search traffic, there may be 100 other very small search engines if that. You then have about 10 well known pay per click (ppc’s) engines, the biggest one of these being “Overture”. Search engines in total hold only 38% of all the current websites registered with a domain name.

Choosing Domain Names for Your Business

Posted in Domain by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007

by: Lois S.

Let’s say that you’re creating a website for Barb’s Specialty Pet Products. Should the domain name be barbsspecialtypetproducts.com?

Perhaps — but don’t stop there. Having the right domain name, or domain names, can bring more traffic to your site.

Why more than one domain name?

One domain is all you need to set up a website. But with more domains directing to your site, you can have these additional benefits:

- Bring site visitors who type variations of your domain name

- Acquire traffic that might otherwise go to your competition

- Harness the marketing power of keyword domains

Your primary domain name

If it’s feasible, use your business or brand name in your primary domain. People will remember it and associate it with your business. Also consider the following factors when choosing your primary domain.

Domain name extensions

Should your primary domain end with .com, .net, or .biz, or with a country-specific extension such as .ca or .co.uk?

If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain can help:

- Site visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They may therefore be more comfortable buying from you.

- Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn’t hosted in that country.

On the other hand, if you’re targeting an international audience, a country-specific domain could work against you. People from outside the country of the extension may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.

If you want to attract both people within your country and those in other countries, have both. Each domain could direct to the same site, with each audience seeing the domain intended for them. For country-specific search results, the primary domain should be the country-specific one.

Chances are that the .com domain you want is already taken. If you use the .net or .biz version, you risk having potential site visitors go to your .com competition instead. Be sure to use the full domain name on all promotional material to reduce this risk.

Domain name length

A short domain is easier to remember, it has less risk of being mistyped, and it’ll fit easily on your business cards and correspondence.

Conversely, if a short name doesn’t represent your business, it’s more difficult for people to remember. The short names you like may already be taken anyway.

If your business name is up to three easy-to-spell words, it’ll probably work as a domain name. For a longer business name, the initials or just one or two words may be easier than remembering a combination of words.

Secondary domain names

Secondary domains directing to your site are for online use:

- For people who type your primary domain name incorrectly

- For people who search for your products or services online

Typing and spelling variations

How many ways can people spell and type your business name?

barbsspecialtypetproducts.com

barbs-specialty-pet-products.com

barbspecialtypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbspecialtyproducts.com

barbspecialtyproduct.com

Hyphens aren’t recommended for your primary domain. When people tell others about your site, they’re likely to omit the hyphens. They may also forget to type them.

For secondary domains, hyphens make long domains easier to read. Each word stands out when people see your domain. However, domains such as buy-keyword-product-now.com make some people view hyphenated domains, especially those with more than one hyphen, as spam-like.

Having the words in domains separated may help some search engines recognize keywords. With Google, though, hyphens don’t make any difference.

Consider all of these variations for secondary domain names:

- With and without hyphens

- Different ways of spelling some words

- Singular and plural versions of nouns

- Extensions with .com and .net as well as a country-specific extension if relevant

What people search for

If you want to find the website for Time magazine, you might do a search for it, or you might try typing in time.com. If you do the latter, you’ll find yourself at the Time site.

This type of search behavior extends to generic words too. Searching for dog collars? Try dogcollar.com, for example, and you’ll be redirected to dogidcollar.com. Do you want life insurance? Lifeinsurance.com redirects to nmfn.com (and so does northwesternmutualfinancialnetwork.com).

While having keyword domain names may not draw a lot of site visitors, using them is a technique to consider.

How to use more than one domain

Set up your website with your primary domain, and use that domain on your correspondence and with your customers.

Point secondary domains to your site using URL forwarding (also called domain forwarding, domain redirect, or URL redirect). To have the secondary domain appear in the browser, use domain masking. You can set up these features when you log in to your account with your domain registrar (if your registrar offers these services).

With domains that are simply variations of your primary domain, you can expect additional traffic just from having set up these domains. With domains that contain keywords, you can get more from them by using them to list your site in online directories. When these domains appear in search results, searchers will see the keywords.

The next step

Once you decide on the available domains that you want, register them immediately. They might not be available tomorrow.

If you don’t already have a business name, you’ll find it easier to market your business online if you choose a primary domain and a business name together. If your first choice for a business name doesn’t work well with any available domains, consider a business name that you can easily market with an available domain. Once you’ve registered that domain name and your business name, register secondary domains and put them to use.

Is it worth registering multiple domains for one site? That depends on your site, but any variations that you don’t register will be available for competitors to register and use. If a domain is valuable to a competitor, it’s valuable to you.

Links From Articles

Posted in Domain by nicr on the October 22nd, 2007

by: Henry James

Links building is a primary job for developing link popularity. Link popularity is one of the vital measures taken in consideration by the search engines to rank your web pages. The number and the quality of links on your website would also play an important role for raising your page ranking. You can use various strategies such as article writing, software and tools to raise your link popularity.

But before you use any of these strategies for link building, it is a must for you to know your existing status. So you should, first of all, find out the link popularity of your website. And it is really a simple process. You can go to any search engine and type “Links: domain name of the website”. Complete information regarding the links of the website will be presented to you by the search engines.

Now you can work to build up your links’ popularity. A number of people are making persistent efforts for building links from various resources. Articles are a good source of displaying the quality of information on your website. Indeed links from articles are greatly helpful in finding a better place in the search engine ranking.

Articles are actually the real attention grabbers on the web. They provide knowledge and information to the users and thus the users keep seeking for these articles regularly.

Unless you have a really good content on your website, you are not going to get the desired links. The basic rule for getting links from articles is to write them on a particular theme. Your articles must be focused and give relevant information to a subject related to your website. Keywords also play a significant role in generating links for you.

You can generate inbound or one way links as well as reciprocal links via these articles. Always make a thorough research of the most used keywords on the internet. The keywords suggest you a topic that people usually seek for information, on the internet. The articles you write must be rich in the keywords. You have to produce the relevant information keeping the good keyword density in your articles. For, this will make your article search engine friendly.

Every one is not skillful to develop such articles. Get some professional writers to do it for you. You can have your own team of writers or can get the articles written by freelance writers as well. Articles written by professional writers will help you in getting the targeted links. You can also keep these articles in a separate section in your website.

One more way to get links from articles is to get them published on the other sites, i.e., other than your site. Internet is full of flourishing websites that offer to publish your articles for free. These sites are a good platform to get noticed in the cyber world. The ezines, ebooks and online news sources are there to help you popularize your website as well.

You can also find some forums to publish your articles for free. Generally the forums do not allow you to put a link at the end of your articles. But the regular members can post their links under their articles. And this turns out to be really profitable for link building.

The primary advantage of getting your articles published is that the internet traffic you get from the article links is targeted. The articles of a particular theme will be only read by the people having interest in that particular subject. This surely, is going to improve your search engine ratings.
